Fishing in Pamlico Sound continues to produce a variety of catches. The shallows are good areas for puppy drum, speckled trout and flounder(shrimp being the bait of choice). Some hardcore fisherman are just starting to haul in some tarpon and big drum using: large cut baits, live baits, popping corks and Gulp. Oregon Inlet is also yielding good varitey. Spanish mackeral, bluefish, triggerfish and black sea bass are the hungriest right now.
Moving inland to the Sandhills area, the Lake Rim Park Rangers(Cumberland County) and Friends of Sampson County Waterways are hosting kayaking trips on local rivers. Pre-registration is required, along with a fee of $40.00(which includes all eqipment needed). The dates are July 26th and August 9th. For more details call Lake Rim Park at 910-424-6134. The Sandhills area is also the starting point for restoration of the Longleaf Pine ecosystem in North Carolina. The Preserve is hosting a program on: the history of the Turpentine Industry and its origins in NC(July 27th). Call 910-692-2167 for more information.

There are three major areas, to go fishing, on the coast this summer. The Piers/shore areas are
relatively inexpensive places to fish. Live shrimp is the natural bait of choice. The main fish caught, in these areas are flounder, Spanish mackerel, king mackerel, pompano, sea mullet and spots. The Inlets/sounds/bays ususally require a small boat, to find the good fishing holes. The main fish caught in these areas are Red/puppy drum, specaled trout, croakers and flounder. Ocean fishing is the most expensive type, but very rewarding. Trolling is producung good results for dolphin(not the mammal) and Wahoo. Bottom fishing is producing good catches of Red grouper.

The Kure Beach Recreation Department is offering a saltwater fishing seminar July 16, 2008 at the Kure Beach Community Center, 118 N. Third Street. The seminar will include tips on flounder fishing by Capt. Jimmy Price and King Mackerel fishing by Capt. Jerry Dislaver. Call 800-538-4355 to register.
A Saltwater Fishing License is required to legally fish the saltwater areas of NC. For size limits, creel limits and public access ramps, go to www.ncwildlife.org .

Hello world, welcome to the great outdoors in North Carolina. Summertime is a great time to get back to nature, from the mountains to the coast. The summers are hot and humid in the ‘Old North State’, but you can find cool relief in tallest mountains east of the Mississippi. From rafting on the Nantahala River to walking across 6,000 ft. ridge tops to sliding down natural waterslides; the NC mountains are a cool place to be. The piedmont area has some beautiful(public access)lakes for skiing, swimming and fishing. The coastal areas offer many options for outdoor activities: Sailng, Surfing, Dolfin watching, Sea shell collecting, Swimming, Fossil hunting, Pier fishing, Surf fishing and Boat fishing; just to name a few.
